Question about armor

So I headshotted this guy from 1 meter away. He turned to the side and oneshot me. (I was inside a little house with a window he just happened to walk by)

Now this isnt a whinepost, just to put it in context. 

The thing is. I hit him with a vepr hunter, using m80 bullets. Should penetrate at least armor lvl 4 right? So the faceshield he was wearing shouldn't stop it, or should it?

The "score-screen' said I hit him, ( 1 out of 1 shot was a hit) but no damage. Instead it said, "Damage absorbed by armor - 5".

Did I just do 5 damage with that hit? Or should I read this differently? 5 armor points?

m80 isnt really an armor pen round, until this wipe it was the lowest/cheapest round for that ammo type.  Not to mention basically every round has a chance to be deflected, ricochet, or in general be absorbed by armor.  Ive taken an m61 round to my face shield from an M1A, it went from 40 dur. to 0 and my head lost about 10 hp but i lived (i know the ammo type and gun cause i ended up killing him).  So sometimes people just get lucky.  Damage in this game isnt 100% consistent so the general rule of thumb is dont stop shooting until you are sure they are down

Its important to remember that pen can be an extremely high chance and still not pen. Sometimes you hit that 1% chance it won't, or get a ricochet off a helmet. Only 5 damage sounds like the shot ricocheted off the helmet.

ok, so I need better ammo (thought m80 was actually good but ok), and I  should spam that shoot button more, I tend to stop firing trying not to waste too many bullets....

M80 should be a one-shot to the chest with any armor below lvl 4 if I recall my prior testing, 2 shots at most.  Maybe the person got lucky and the round ended up ricocheting (only happened to me when I was shooting heads through 2 windows with an M80 round.)
