knife damage

I just knifed a scav 12 times for 156 damage and did not kill him. then he 1 shotted me in the head. Why is the knife dmg so low? 
how can you ever knife someone without beeing killed?

The devs are unrealistically fearful of hatchlings.

Here you can check all the damages, range, stab damage, etc.

If you were trying to hit his head, do remember that you need to aim a little higher, kinda above his head due to the hitbox when you are close to something.
