Scav on Scav violence

Now, usually I don't attack my fellow Scavs on a run but there are exceptions. Usually I will only pop a Scav if I have terrible gear, a bad loot run, and  I am near the extract. However, something odd happened that I am not sure how to explain.

I know that once you attack a scav all other become hostile. Got it. But I was on customs in the storage unit area outside of the big red barn. I wasn't geared too well and there were a few fellow scavs patrolling in storage. So, taking a risk, I wait till one is alone and pop him, get his gear. Figuring I had to fight the others, I noticed they weren't hostile. So, get another one alone, pop him, get his stuff. Last scav still isn't hostile, so pop him and repeat. I ran across others scavs across the river and they didn't engage me. 

So, question is, can you kill a scav as long as it is out of line of sight of another scav? My weapons didn't have a suppressor so that wasn't it.

They work like a squad....

But if you kill all scavs that are working together near Big Red... Don't mean that all the scav of map well agro you on side... The next group, like over the river well not agro you on sight... because they didn't see you as an aggressor, so you can kill them or not... Your choice.
