Bought a code for a friend and now his game disappeared?

As the title states months ago I bought a left behind edition for a friend, have proof of purchase from Battlestate. He later upgraded to EOD edition, yesterday after update his game completely disappeared with no warning? says he had to rebuy the game. Anyone have an idea what happened here?

thank you for the quick response. he opened a support ticket, I just didn't want this process to go on for days and days. Ill have him try to send an email.
