Ambient noise needs work...

I'm not saying it sucks, I think it's mostly good, such as the guns, those are quite realistic, probably the most realistic of any FPS game i've played. But lets have a serious talk about the ambient noise in this game...On some maps it seems to me that the sound in a woodsy area like the woods map shouldn't be loud wind like your in the middle of a blizzard. Trees break up wind flow and absorb a lot of sound, it can get pretty damn quiet in a forest. So perhaps this is just a placeholder ambient noise loop they use between a few maps, that's fine for an unfinished game. but I think it should be considered to get some extra attention to that.

Then there's the Factory level....why does the whole place sound like starship enterprise engine hum in a loop? that's really weird. I've been in factory before, it doesn't make droning sound like that. Unless it's in service and machines are running, you'd hear more than just a hum. For a lot of the noises in the factory, i'd also expect  some reverb and cold echoes of metal things. Especially the SCAVs shouting at each other should echo through the place.

I don't mind ambient noise and environmental effects, but I'd like the developer to at least put some effort into ambient/environment noise that makes sense. Otherwise I find it to be very disorienting sometimes when something sounds off and it just doesn't seem in the right place. I'm finding myself wondering if I might be hearing something around the corner but ambient noise is masking it too much because its too loud... Hopefully the DEVs can revisit the sound development in this game with more effects and tweaks? I think it would really go along way for the immersion. That's my feedback so far for this beta, sorry in advance if anyone else brought it up.

ALSO, if anyone asks, i'm playing this game using a pretty good headset, Sennheiser HD380 pro. I think they're considered a pretty accurate set of monitor headphones for the money.

I know you posted this back in August but I just came across it when searching the forums due to the same stuff.. You are absolutely right. The background noise is terrible. It is just plain ridiculous.. And it's not just on woods or factory.. It is everywhere.. If I am outside it's either the wind blowing like a tornado or rain. Then if I go Inside whether it is factory, dorms, gas station, or whatever....  I get some sort of loud humming noise.. You hit the nail on the head with the "starship enterprise engine hum" because that is exactly what it sounds like. lI really hope they fix this. Please devs if you ever pay attention to anything in the forums at all, for the love of God, fix the background noise.

I guess that would be great, and all, but I don't findthe issue to be a factory only issue. It's the background noise in general. Wind noise is too loud outside, and humming noise inside. I don't know enough about how video games are made to know for sure how it can be solved but I would think it could be done by having the audio engineers or whoever handles the audio adjust the sound so that the background noise is at an acceptable normalized level instead of how loud it is now.

Agreed, it's way too loud and covers other sounds too much.

The brain usually adapts to an environment and focuses on foreign sounds more, making ambient noise barely audible.

So yeah lower it thanks.

old post i know but i have to agree that the background ambient sounds are just terrible , wearing headphone makes it almost unbearable ,

starship engine when in factory is a  damn good description , shoreline and woods sounds like i'm in a 100 mile an hour gale , the sounds are so loud they are actually a distraction, more so when using noise canceling features , as it makes it stand out even more :/

i hope this changes with release as having ambient sounds almost as loud as the games main sounds is just bad :(

First, wow 2017 this is an oldie but a goldie, was shocked when I saw that.

Onto content,  @SlayLxi, what adjustments would you suggest? What work would you like to see done? What things about the ambient noises would you like to see changed or tweaked and or how would you do it?

I agree that the sounds are off and I feel like recently Comtacs are out of control loud. I have more then once had instances where I can hear my mate like he is right next to me. When in reality he is quite some distance away.

Spoiler

The example in the spoiler, using Mapgenie Customs, says I would have been 26m away from the friend (About 85 feet). I could hear him check his mag as if he was right to my left. Not to mention there are times when I can hear shots with comtacs, as if they were just about 30 m in front of us, but he hears nothing. I would make one suggestions here that I think comtacs need a sound adjustment, not sure what exactly they need, but I feel like they need tuned down.

Onto the ambient noises, I do feel like they are generally good. However, I think those too are very very loud too. I cannot comment on the weather and noises in the forests of Russia but I can comment from the mountains of the North Eastern United States, I can say it does not sound like I have a fan in my face. I would like to see these toned down a little bit as well, personally I think they are extremely loud at the moment and very constant. I think some variation in the noises, gusts of wind, rustling of trees, and blowing of grass or howling around rocks or through windows could be very much improved with just a little variation in length and randomness of the sound.

I also have a strange theory, but I feel like people get a Tarkovian Syndrome to sounds, similar to how we thing we feel our phones vibrate when they actually do not because of the gratification of receiving messages or the loathing of getting them. I think the same can be said about "Foot Step" sounds in Trakov, the thrill of the fight or flight system giving us the excitement and satisfaction as to why we play, I feel like my brain just hears false sounds.

TL:DR - Tone down the volume and distance of comtacs; Tone down ambient noises; add variation to the ambient sounds so they do not feel so constant.
