New Player Question: Is this game just about getting poo on for an hour?

I saw this game, picked it up because it looked good, but it lacks a lot of appeal because I'm just getting poo on every match. I get it, you want "realism" but I get cra_p_ped on 10x less in Arma 3.

Am I missing something? So you just go in, get loot, and try to escape? Well, more then likely die to a guy you can't see.

I want to like the game because I blew $50 on it, but I'm really not seeing it.... what gives?

Escape From Tarkov is a hardcore, milsim looter-shooter. The point behind it is to loot, trade, modify your weapons and increase your reputation with your vendors, earn all the top gear you can. Load out, go in, wreak havoc on scavs and other players. It's a very PVP heavy oriented game. That's not to say you won't meet a few friendlies out there. I did earlier and it was a lot of fun, but the majority of the time, you are going to die and get ruined while you learn the game.

There is a sherpa forum (basically a mentor), where you can find a sherpa to play with who will teach you the basics, and give you a better idea of how to survive. It's a really fun game if you give it a chance, and it's even more fun when you go out with friends. Playing solo? Yeah, good luck my guy. It's rough playing solo. You're more than welcome to play with me if you'd like, have a very large discord and a lot of people to play with. Just send me a PM on the forums here and I'll send you the info.

Keep in mind what you are playing right now is an unfinished product, and a beta at that. It will go through ups and downs before they finalize and get everything in the direction it needs to be. Just try to hang in there, but do know that you are going to die... A LOT. I do already, and even so, I do kill players quite often.

I was the same, youve gotta take the rough (and there is alot of roughage) with the smooth, take it slow, learn spawn locations.
Wear a headset if you have one, it makes a massive difference in the spotting/direction of movement sounds.

Hide alot, observe the target from a distance, dont go in fully geared all the time, especially if you have mundane missions that require you to get x amount of rare loot (looking at you USB Flash Drives!!)

I came back to this patch after a few months away from the game because i was waiting for more stuff to test and a network improvement. I started slow, just using hatchet to see what has changed with the spawns scav areas and reaction times of ai, then i started taking my pistol in about 5 raids after, then what i find i take out in the next raid (removing my pistol) if i died, i would go back to my pistol and start a new, this way it gets you used to the inevitable death if your player, it will happen alot, and some of the times you will be suspicious of the death.

Take your time, hide and observe. know the enemy. Running around will get you killed real fast im afraid.

You have to literally slow your game down, take everything you know from a FPS shooter and throw it out the window, start fresh with this one and learn the intricacies early on, watch some videos. Once you get a feel for the game and the grind, it quickly becomes addictive..

You don't expect to get into a new game and immediately get good at it, do you? Its the same thing you gonna experience in Rainbow 6 Seige, or pretty much any shooters out there.

Why?

Cos, (if you are an experienced FPS player, you would already know)...

1. You don't know the map

2. You don't know the common spawn points

3. You don't know the popular routes players take from each spawn point

4. You don't know the ambush points

Without knowing any of these 4 things, you aren't going to make it in ANY FPS, rb6s, CSGO, whatever, you name it.

These are but the basics...

EFT is more than these basics... after you have these basics down, you need to understand:

1. The game economy... its so easy to go broke in this game if you are not careful. Figure out how to keep yourself stocked at all times.

2. The difference in PMC gameplay and Scav gameplay. PMC kills, Scav loots... you need to understand and play those roles well to ensure point 1 happens

3. How the traders work, particularly Fence, if you wish to keep yourself stocked at all times

4. The movement and combat system... very different from regular shooters. You need to know in particular how damage works in this game and how armor works and how they interact with the many different bullet types.

After you have figured out all of the above, you then should start to watch A LOT of youtube videos... see how the good players move, where they go, how they think about everything. Then things will start to make sense to you and you will die LESS randomly and more knowingly (yes, you still gonna die).

In short yes. Basically its being set in the complete opposite format for fun. Except to retain only the die hard fan boys. Like the current  rumored release setup of running instances to unlock global map. Should be the opposite. Start with a global map with missions. Start bear and usec on opposite sides of global map with a start base and large group of faction npcs, with each faction having a smaller hideout with small group of friendly npcs in each major region. Make friendly fire in faction negative karma. At Base and hideout have access to the  instances for elite gear,  ultra rare items, end game missions. Let anyone run around in the instances and lvl scale global map groups.

Good responses and feedback. Gives me a sense of direction; though I'm still pissed atm that shotguns seem awfully weak atm? I've played scav 3-4x with a shotgun and ppl dont drop at less than 5 yards?

Like I get it you want realism, but at that range even with body armor you are going to be on your back let alone with no armor. I've gotten killed after I shoot someone in the torso so many times with no body armor.

Shotguns are overpowered at the moment or just broken because of the face hitbox that was added. Scavs drop at 100m and start spraying buckshot into your direction hitting your face with one or two pellets that kill you

You start to get tasks at level 5. Those let you level up the traders and get access to better things. The magic number is level 15 because by then you should have learnt the maps, opened up level 2 for almost all the traders and stopped getting killed by the first AI you see.

Right now the game is really tough slog at the start. Like WAY harder than previous wipes. I think on release the traders will be in a better place and have a better progression so it wont be quite as tough (its never going to be easy though).

This game in my eyes requires: Interest, Discipline, Time and Patience. I learned the hard way by buying a game that looks cool/interesting. So before I buy any game I do research. When I first saw Tarkov though I was blown away. I came across it through twitch and I think its also when I first watched Kotton as well, back in December of last year I think it was. Wasn't till February when I actually purchased the standard edition. By then I knew what I was getting into. The immersion I seen in this game was something I was looking for. Also I like loot and Tarkov has a lot of loot. I like questing to an extent, also Tarkov has these as task. Which aren't bad I like them. Even the new ones added this last patch. And of course I like PvP shooters. This is a great PvPvE game. IMO It puts that Hunt:Showdown to shame. So if that's what your into I would keep trucking. Don't give up as you progress you will get better. Also don't forget that first screen you see when you pick your language.  Yes, you will die, and, most probably, very often, but remember - this is still a game. Best of luck out there!

I find it interesting and the best shooter that I have ever played.

I get shitted on when I first started but seeing how my KDR went from 0 to 0.something to now 2.something and my survival rate from 0 to 0.something to now having long survival streaks just goes to show that this game has so much depth to it that its impossible for someone with less than like 100 hours in it to be any good in it.

Make no mistake, I lost all the fort armor etc all the goodies that came with the pack within the first hour of my play and I had no kills whatsoever and I never survived! LOL! Its not even about your gear until you have reached a certain level of proficiency.

But if you like difficult games, you will find every step of overcoming that steep learning curve to be so darn rewarding.
